About the foundation

The German Orient-Foundation was established in 1960 by the German Near and Middle East Association (Nah- und Mittelost-Verein e.V., NUMOV). Due to the significance of NUMOV, the foundation enjoyed strong support from the beginning and swiftly evolved into the leading organisation for Modern Oriental Studies. The foundation’s mission is the enhancement and promotion of the relationship between Germany and the states and societies of the Near and Middle East in the academic, economic, cultural and political spheres.

Under the umbrella of the German Orient-Foundation, the German Orient-Institute (Deutsches Orient-Institut, DOI) was established. The institute is the oldest non-profit scientific institution devoted to Near and Middle East studies in Europe.
Since 1960, the German Orient-Institute has been publishing the academic journal "ORIENT – Deutsche Zeitschrift für Politik, Wirtschaft und Kultur des Orients", comprising scholarly articles, essays and book reviews by international experts on topics relating to Islam. The journal "ORIENT" is published tri-monthly.

Geographically, the focus is on the MENA region, Turkey, the Gulf states, Iran, South and Southeast Asia, and the societies of Central Asia and the Middle East which are Islamic in nature. The scientific work, on the other hand, focuses on contemporary political, economic and cultural issues in the fields of economics, the humanities and social sciences.
